4 Incredible Reasons Why You Need To Pole Dance

Have you come across an Instagram Pole Dancer and thought “Wow, I wish I could do that!” or “If only I was that strong or flexible.”

Great news! It’s become an increasingly popular activity to join with the expansion of pole dancing in this past decade. Especially now, with apps and pole kits like Fit2Flaunt available, you can become a pole dancer right in the comfort of your own home!

Coming across this post was not by luck, chances are you’ve searched for reasons yourself and are conjuring up the commitment to begin. Let me make this decision easier on you by starting off with this: JUST DO IT! If the fear of something new is holding you back from trying, let me reassure you that the worst thing that could happen is that you realize it’s not for you. Regardless, you’ll be much happier with yourself afterwards because you made the decision to get out there and do it. Sometimes, acting on your interests is enough.

So, why should you try pole dancing? In this post, I’m going to share 4 reasons why you should commit to purchasing that intro class.

1. To Try Something New

Step out of your comfort zone.

As we grow older, most women may feel like they are ‘too old’ to join a new activity or that they have ‘missed the deadline’. Thus limiting themselves further to not even try. This excuse, (along with “not being flexible enough”) is the number one doubt I hear from women of all ages.

Despite what you think, you can partake in new hobbies even if you are past the age of eighteen.

You may be thinking: “But I’m still scared! I have no dance background, what if I’m no good at it? What if people judge me?”

I know full well how it feels to be the newbie in the class and not have any friends. Maybe you look around and start to internally comparing yourself to the rest of the class: you’re the least flexible, least coordinated, or not strong enough. But here’s the thing, no one is judging you that hard except yourself!

Everyone else in the class is also in their own head worrying about themselves. We all tend to be our own worst critic. Getting in our own heads can drain all the enthusiasm and positivity we had to start off. But what we have to remember is: we’re not going to be fantastic on anything we have no experience with. Why put that high of an expectation to start? That’s like getting upset at a new born baby for not walking yet. You will build the skills you need over time and with enough practice. Give yourself grace, be patient and be kind to yourself.

During my first class, I remember not being fully satisfied with myself.

“I could have pointed my toes more,” I thought.

“If only I was stronger, I could have pulled off this move.”

If I was more flexible, maybe that spin would have looked better.

Instead of allowing myself to sulk in these negative criticisms, I turned them into positive learning lessons. All these thoughts pushed me to want to do it better next time. I knew where I went wrong and I found myself wishing I had more time after class to practice everything I had just learned.

Also, it’s worth noting that the first class you take will mainly focus on getting your body acquainted with the pole. But don’t be surprised if you start feeling more connected with your body during the first class! Which leads me to my next point:

2. To Connect with Your Body

Strength. Flexibility.

Many women who have begun pole dancing and stuck to it have raved about how this activity made them appreciate their bodies so much more. How it even boosted their confidence or healed their relationship with their bodies.

But how?

There are many answers, but we’ll focus on the main one. Given the sensual nature of this activity, you will be put in shapes and positions that will leave you ogling yourself. You’ll look back at your footage and think, “I can’t believe I did that!” It’s a very addictive feeling.

I remember my first in-person class, the speakers were bumping with heavy bass. The owner had installed club-quality lighting equipment. My hair was down and in the mirror I could only see the silhouette of my body next to the pole. I hadn’t even moved yet and I thought “I’m literally the baddest in the building” and no one could tell me otherwise. The confidence that came with the environment was insane! The energy in the studio crisp. I was tingling with nervousness and excitement!

Maybe you never realized how long your legs looked at a certain angle or never admired all the wonderful range of movement your body allows you to have.

Pole dancing boils down to trusting the body you have. It’s only you and the pole, the sole focus becomes you and what your unique body can do around and on it. Each challenge is a feat your mind and body has to overcome simultaneously. As this relationship strengthens and the trust in yourself blooms – you will feel entirely connected to the wonders of your body.

Whether you’re taking a class online or in person, closing your eyes and feeling each movement and noticing how it makes you feel not only gets you in tune with your body, but your femininity as well.

3. To (Re)Connect with Your Femininity

Can you relate?

People begin this hobby for many different reasons, but my favorite reason is this one. This topic is my top personal important reason I recommend women or feminine people to pursue pole dancing. I’m sure I’m not alone in the following experience:

A machismo mindset was prevalent in my early years. I felt shame for acting “too girly” growing up. So much so that I put certain interests aside in order to appease the masses so I could ‘fit in’ with the environment I grew up in. I shelved those interests, but as I continued to grow and stand on my own, I realized I didn’t want to hide any more of my femininity than I already had. I wasn’t being true to myself. Over the years, I learned to reconnect with it and fully embrace it with what I chose to wear, how I did my makeup and who I surrounded myself with.

Along the way, I found pole dancing.

This is one big change I made that allowed me to reconnect with my femininity in my adult years. It helped me release any last bits of shame I held surrounding being “too girly”. It allowed me the space to appreciate something wholly feminine. I know I am not alone in this, your journey may look different.

There are women who take up pole dancing after giving birth to their children because they are looking for something to “make them feel sexy” again. Some career dominating women start this hobby because they want to balance out the grating day-to-day work life with intentional, slow movement. Other women are in their later years and are looking for ways to get in touch with themselves. All of which have the underlying goal of reconnecting with themselves – reconnecting with their femininity.

Dancing made me appreciate all the amazing ways my body can move, how hard I can push it while keeping rhythm to the music around.

In summary, pole dancing makes me feel unabashedly connected and whole. Not only that, connecting to my femininity alone makes me feel powerful!

4. To Feel POWERFUL

Dancing is powerful.

Lastly, dancing requires you to connect both mind and body. As you begin pole dancing, you’ll begin to notice areas you can strengthen. You will feel mentally strong because of the trust required to do certain tricks. You will feel physically strong overtime because of the difficulty of each movement. If you truly are able to connect with this art form, it will make you feel powerful and unstoppable.

Feeling sexy IS powerful. Climbing up a pole is physically powerful. Challenging yourself during a freestyle is mentally powerful.

Dancing is powerful.

I have been to 3 different pole studios in my few years of dancing and I can confidently say that at each one, I felt so safe and encouraged. The community of pole dancers is one of the kindest and most supportive environments I’ve ever been to. Each individual was there to learn and grow at their own pace. We cheer each other on and are always hyping people up! All this to say, the culture around this dance style has evolved into a sisterhood of sorts. A judgment free zone with only the best intentions for your individual journey.

I urge you to commit to taking at least one intro class – be it by yourself or with a friend. Once you do, be sure to leave a comment or send me a message on how it went!
